Connecting a MBP M1 to HDMI

I'm trying to connect my MBP M1 to my external Dell P2715Q monitor via HDMI. I can see that when plug in the HDMI, the monitor flicks on for a moment, a message appears about going into power save mode for a second, then it goes into power save mode. This makes me think that at least a signal is making it from the MBP to the monitor, but that there's a driver issue or something. When I look up the Displays on the MBP, only the built in retina appears. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to use a different cable?

  Never mind, from reading around, it sounds like I need to get a USB-C to DisplayPort cable instead of using HDMI.
