Drive requirements for HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA2
Hi,
I would like to fill a 'casing only' device with a solid state hard drive. What are the requirements you should consider ? According to the specifications:
2.5" SATA ATA-5, 9.5mm thickness. I am not really familiar with the meaning of SATA and ATA-5. If you consider a SSD HD of which the connections is S-ATA (III) and 6.6 mm thick, does it fit ?
Thanks and regards,
Marc

I too would like to know about using a SSD drive in the COLORSPACE UDMA 2. I am a little surprised that your question hasn't been answered yet.

My 500 GB SSD works in my UDMA 1, but my new UDMA 2 doesn't see it.... firmware perhaps??

still no answer. The 1TB drive still doesn't work in my UDMA2 . This is the second device from them that has bricked. I guess it'll be the last!!

Hi Rob Western Digital WD10JPVT this drives works fine I was recommended by the German distributor what make is your drive?
Other recommendations are Seagate ST1000LM024 Samsung HN-M101MB both 1tb also a toshiba SATA MQ01ABDxxx series has wrked fine it is 5400 speed and 9.5 thicknes both important features.

have just checked with my spare samsumg 250 gig ssd the 840 series perfect in both udma and udma 2 the prices are very good now and it makes the colorspace featherweight now

for the UDMA2 seems a 960GB SSD is not a goer...... I have a crucial in it.
My UDMA works fine with a 500GB SSD in it.

interesting so a compromise on cost to size is the 500GB ssd reasonable size crucial seem very good value at the moment. and it does work in both devices unlike the almost 1tb.

my next trick is to swap them around, but I don't want to break my UDMA which is operating flawlessly.

YES I prefer the udma it seems to last forever on battery since you get it charging via the usb port unlike the mk 2 . good luck

@ Visitor 40019276: I can't speak to the drive support though I can comment on the charging. The fact that the UMDA2 didn't charge via USB out of the box was almost a show stopper when I received it. Before returning it, I took it up with SANHO support. Apparently, it CAN charge via the USB port. The cable must be correctly "wired" to support the charging however. Many of the cables I had lying around would not. They kindly sent me a short USB cable that did and voila! I still have the unit. The unit will not power itself from the USB. That is a pain.
Another thing that happened when I took it on its trial run was occasionally, it would not start and I would get a white screen with nothing else. Or, with downloading a card, it would be hung at at "Searching Card." Working with support and after several factory resets, it worked. I have not used it since.
I have not yet investigated the drive support for the older, UMDA model. At this point, it is a tie on which one I prefer. The tie is only because of the higher capacity of the UMDA2. I have a trip to the Galapagos planned and I will need to make that decision soon on which I will take. Has anyone found a capacity or significant limitation to upgrading the UMDA I to say 750GB-1TB?

Thanks Eric the original udma is available for sale with 1tb drives since I have one and mine is not working with 1tb drives yet the udma2 I have is fine with the same drives certainly I have read somewhere that it will work with 750 drives what size is your current udma's drive.
If you don't trust the UDMA2 I would opt for the old faithful with the latest firmware. I have put in a request from support on the maximum size drive that can be used with the UDMA we shall see what they say mine is only 250 so even if I can get the 500 gig to work that would be good.

Mine is a 350 UMDA2. I see now that I posted to this thread a long time ago. For my use, I need 750gb or better. 0 -
it appears that 750 according to certain manuials and support should work the issue of jumpers is suggested in the manuals I have even heard of a particular Hitachi 1.5 gig drive and those other drives I mentioned in my earlier posts.
Since I don't have a 750 drive only 1tb which don't work in my udma I cannot say for sure but I would go that route.
At present I am waitng for the OTG kit to do synchronised backups2 another drive and of course the answer from hyperdrive support to my question how large can the drives be in the udma not the udma 2
If you have the udma 2 it will accept a 1tb with no issues but get 1 of those model numbers I posted if you can for compatability it seems if they work in a ps3 or ps4 that they good for the colorspace devices but am still not sure with the udma mk 1

Yes, the UDMA2 runs smoothly with a SSD 2.5 Sata III.
You can use any brand SSD but please keep in mind a SSD will not increase the performance of the UDMA2 compared to a traditional HDD. Some SSD come in 7.5mm. You can use a 7.5 to 9.5mm converter in this situation.
Thanks!

who is brittni?
the idea of a ssd is that you don't have to worry about jarring the HHD which will stop.
all of the recommended drives are HHD NOT SSD.
I'm suprised no one at sanho will do any thing to allow SSD to work.
Very poor customer service.

And I get a no hard drive with any SSD, 500gb, 1tb.
any thing smaller is a waste of time.
yes it works with a HHD but you have to be careful not to jar the drive or it will loose data.
I think you would sell more devices.

Here'a response from Angelo in Technical Support -- It's bad news but it should clear things up.

Hi,
The UDMA2 is not compatible with SSDs, it causes system instability for the UDMA2. Only standard 5400 or 7200 rpm drives will work with the UDMA2.
Thanks

@Angelo Whaaaaat! And it took you over a year to answer that! I must say, that is a pretty sad situation with this device, a device we use in the field to backup our cards to save our livelihood, can't support SSD??? What's up with that! We want it to have no moving parts and be bullet proof. What do you think we do with this device. Leave it at home?

This is a massive failure. The UDMA (Mark One) does support SSD's. This device is too slow and now archaic. I am looking for alternatives.
You just lost a good customer Hypershop!!

This device works well but I handle it very carefully so I don't upset the disk drive that is of course spinning at 5400 or 7200 rpm.
I know my lap top freezes if I move it while it is running so I installed the SSD drive I tried in the Colorspace UDMA 2.
I don't know why this company is so stubborn in there attitude toward SSD's. I would think they would sell more if it was a solid state device.
Maybe this is not getting to the engineers and only going to the air head blond that gave me the first worthless excuse.
Brittni I think her name was.

I also think that not supporting SSD's is a complete failure. Anyways, I made the stupid decision to buy a device while I was in the US, but oh my, what do I regret that. Back home (Belgium) I was able to switch it on maybe 3 times and the power slider was broken already (it sank into the device). Did not send it for repair because of the costs attached and the risk that the device will be held at customs. As it seems, not robust at all to take into 'the field'. In my case, just a huge waste of money :-(

Here's a copy of the feedback I gave Hypershop,
I read the forums before buying a case only Colorspace and Brittni from Sanho clearly stated
"Yes, the UDMA2 runs smoothly with a SSD 2.5 Sata III.
You can use any brand SSD but please keep in mind a SSD will not increase the performance of the UDMA2 compared to a traditional HDD. Some SSD come in 7.5mm. You can use a 7.5 to 9.5mm converter in this situation.

After purchasing 2 SSDs you then tell me they aren't supported. Giving conflicting information like that is inexcusable and almost deceitful as you can see from the reaction on this forum.
You really need to address the deficiencies in your customer service (something frequently complained about by people with support issues).

If you are out there, care to correct your post that SSD's will work?
They don't and if they did it would improve the usefulness of the UDMA2.
Contrary to your statements.

For those who still want to know about the compatibility of this product and a SSD, here's what I got from HYPERsupport when I asked them:
Unfortunately, the SSD drive is not supported by UDMA2 due to the power output from the device. You might experience the HDD NOT FOUND when unit is booting up.
We will have the new UDMA3 released soon, expected in early September. The UDMA3 can work with the SSD drive.
Please let me know if you have any further question.
best regards,
Kelvin

Hello, I use the UDMA2 with an Samsung 850EVO 500GB and Firmware V35 or V37.
It runs but sometimes is the message: Detecting new physical errors on the hard disk! Please backup data in time. (R:-1039622016,H0)
Is this a probleme of the UDMA2 or the SSD?
