Sorry to say the HDMI and MiniDP only work with the same video port type monitor. It has to be HDMI to HDMI or MiniDP to MiniDP /DP.

When I connect the original Apple MiniDP/Thunderbolt-to-VGA adapter to the MiniDP-Port of my HyperDrive, I can connect VGA screens without issues...
@BP, thank you for sharing the information. It seems like the Apple MiniDP/Thunderbolt-to-VGA adapter is an active MiniDP, which convert the MiniDP signal to VGA signal.
Most of the MiniDP to VGA adapter is designed in PASSIVE mode, which won't able to convert the video signal from one to another.
